Jacob Dobson's has been using figurative sculpture for his artistic expression since 1990. His formal studies began at Herron School of Art in Indianapolis. He then pursued figurative sculpture at BYU-Hawaii with Viliami Toluta'u and Mataumu Alisa and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2002. Then in 2004 when figurative art training was rare, Jacob received his Master of Fine Arts from The New York Academy of Art which provided the best training in the world while sharing a personal dialogue with the most forward-thinking figurative artists of our time under and the tutelage of Martha Erlebacher, Harvey Citron, Steven Assael, Sabin Howard, and Leonid Lerman.
As a full-time college professor since 2006, Jacob has been able to pursue his goal of continual learning while teaching and exhibiting award winning sculptures. Currently he teaches at Indiana University-Indianapolis and previously at The Art Institute of Indianapolis.
He is exhibited with and is an elected member of the National Sculpture Society and is currently serving as their Midwest Ambassador. He has been exhibiting at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint’s International Art Competition in Salt Lake City for 20 years.
Edifying the lives of others has been his purpose since he was a young artist. For over 25 years Jacob has not found a more worthy and inspiring subject to express than the restored gospel of Jesus Christ and made this his focus of subject matter. He has a 14 ft wide relief sculpture in the Indianapolis, Indiana Temple Baptistry. He also feels he is teaching the gospel through helping his students analyze meaning in the human experience and observing truth found in nature’s beauty.
He looks forward to going into the studio in the mornings and the classroom in the afternoons. His faith, family, and desire to serve are the purpose that fuels his drive.
